Take a look at what we are preparing for you,
delegates and observers!
Every spring, cherry blossoms line of the streets of East Asia, ushering in the new season with the enthralling landscapes of the light-pink petals. The people of East Asia are invigorated by the coming of this beautiful, pleasant warmth. Such auspicious terms, however, are only temporary: there will be more seasons to come – more winters that will freeze, and more springs that will thaw and revitalize. When considering East Asia as a whole, where does it stand in this spectrum of seasons?
In the past there has been remarkable economic growth in the region, dubbed the “East Asian Renaissance” by the World Bank, and due to such growth East Asia is a significant player in the global economy. Furthermore, even though throughout modern history Western culture and politics have often been the most influential, East Asia, despite being latecomers to the global stage, has made great strides and wields great weight today. In this respect, the region has certainly met its spring, at least once.
Yet, to meet spring again, it is necessary to consider the recent issues of today. Regional tensions have been increasing, and the economies have been suffering from slowdowns in growth. The increased globalization of its societies raises many pressing social questions in East Asia, where the population has been historically more homogeneous than most other areas of the world. To say that the region is suffering through a bleak winter may be too pessimistic, but surely there is a need for discourse about the current situation and future actions – and this year our goal at YNEAN is to recognize this need, and act on it.
Through the conference in August, we hope to provide youths a platform through which to discuss the steps East Asia needs to take, in order to further flourish in an increasingly competitive setting. As individuals, we often merely await the passing of seasons, entirely at the mercy of nature. However, as a cooperative group, we hope to search for more voluntary and deliberate paths towards East Asia’s new spring, to strive towards a Blooming Asia.
